Dynamics and determinants of right-wing populist mobilisation in Germany

Western Europe has recently experienced increasing protest mobilisation by right-wing populist movements. Although these movements are receiving scholarly attention, systematic data on activities is limited. In this research note, original used to describe the activity of Germany’s Pegida movement across space and time explore city-level determinants mobilisation. The dataset records 373 events with more than 337,000 participants in major cities between 2014 2017. documents involvement right extremists during protests illustrates movement’s nativist anti-elitist orientation. correlational analysis shows that less likely a large foreign-born population lower income levels. Moreover, correlate vote shares for party AfD, underlining party-movement linkage local entrenchment ideology.
